Mike Emery

Mike Emery

I grew up reading and treasuring books, so it is not surprising that I have found myself pursuing a Master’s degree in Library and Information Science. But, while books were one of my initial pulls, increasingly technology is where I spend my time, trying to make information available online. The increasingly pervasive role of technology, specifically the internet, has led a few friends to ask why I’d get a degree in something that doesn’t matter anymore, but I think the role of librarians is more important than ever. While the power and scope of the internet is immediately obvious to anyone who has ever used Google, so too is the lack of organization and the challenges in finding actually relevant information. As more and more content is put online, it becomes increasingly important to develop mechanisms for searching for information that is actually relevant, and thus librarians, who specialize in this, becomes increasingly important.
