Using RefWorks Write-N-Cite from off-campus

Even though you may have logged into the Library’s proxy server through your web browser in order to search databases, when you use Write-N-Cite, which operates through MS Word, you will be required to login to the proxy server again as well as into your RefWorks account. Information on configuring Write-N-Cite for use from off-campus through the proxy server is outlined below.

For Windows Users

To download Write-N-Cite (WNC):

In RefWorks, select Write-N-Cite from the Tools menu. Find the section for Windows Users. You will find a link to download WNC for Windows as well as links to information on installing and working with WNC. Note that RefWorks offers WNC III, compatible with MS Vista and Word 2007, and WNC v.2, compatible with XP and Word 2003 and lower.

To use WNC III from off-campus:

If you want to use WNC III from off campus, follow the steps below to connect WNC to the Library’s proxy server:

  1. From the Windows Start Menu select Programs, then RefWorks.
  2. Select the WNC Proxy Configuration Utility and right-click on it (do not double click it).
  3. Click on Run As.
  4. Select The following user: radio button.
  5. Select Administrator in the User Name drop-down.
  6. Click OK.
  7. Go back to the Windows Start Menu and again select Programs, then RefWorks.
  8. Select the WNC Proxy Configuration Utility.
  9. Enter the following URL:

To use WNC v.2 from off-campus:

If you want to use WNC v.2 from off campus, follow the steps below to connect WNC to the Library’s proxy server:

  1. From the Start Menu select Programs, then RefWorks.
  2. Select the WNC Proxy Configuration Utility.
  3. Enter the following URL:

https://ccl.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://www.refworks.com/RefWorks/?WNC=true

For Mac Users

  1. Activate Write-N-Cite.
  2. Select Preferences from the Write-N-Cite menu.
  3. Select the Proxy option and enter the following URL:
