Carrels and Group Study Rooms

Graduate Study Carrel Policies

Honnold/Mudd Library

PURPOSE

Honnold/Mudd Library reserves 40 Graduate Study carrels for graduate students working on extended research projects (Doctoral dissertations, Master's theses or other long-term papers) in an effort to provide them with a quiet, semi-private area where they can study as well as safely keep their books and research materials.

POLICIES
Assignment Length: Because of the high demand for Graduate Study carrels and their purpose as an aid to students doing extended projects, all carrel assignments are reviewed at the end of each semester.

Masters Degree students are limited to an assignment length of two semesters (not including the Summer term). Ph.D. students are limited to an assignment length of four semesters (not including Summer terms). At the expiration of the carrel assignment a student may sign up again for a future carrel assignment.

Communication: The Circulation Department assumes that each Graduate Study carrel is being used on a regular basis and that we can therefore communicate with patrons by placing notices on the carrels. It is the patron's responsibility to respond in a timely manner to all such communications.

Monitoring: A member of the Circulation staff will periodically monitor each Graduate Study carrel for both usage and policy violations. The department reserves the right to revoke carrel privileges should a pattern of disuse or infractions be discovered during these checks.

Door Access Codes: the code to your Study can be obtained from the Circulation Department. The access codes to the Graduate Study are to be kept confidential! Appropriate action will be taken against a patron who gives out access codes or against anyone found in a study who is not assigned to one of the carrels.

Personal Property: You may bring personal supplies and equipment like typewriters and personal computers into your carrel, but the library is not responsible for property left in these areas.

Food: No food is permitted in the studies (including beverages like coffee or soft drinks). The sole exception is capped water bottles containing drinking water. Smoking is not allowed.

Courtesy: Any successful carrel program requires that all users show common courtesy to those with whom they share a study carrel as well as with the library staff who administer the policies.

Use Instructions

1. When checking out books you wish to leave on your Graduate Study carrel:

a. Please indicate that it is for your carrel so that the Circulation Department will not desensitize the material. This may prevent someone else from leaving the library with an item checked out to you.

b. The Circulation Department will give you one carrel flag per book that must be placed in the book. Fill out the flag at the time of check-out. It must indicate the call number of the book and the number of the carrel. This flag tells the staff that the book is checked out and will prevent it from being returned to the stacks. Please remember that an item on your carrel that is not checked out is "lost" to the library. Such items will be picked up and returned to the stacks.

2. Please do not leave periodicals on your carrel. Any periodical found there will be promptly returned to the stacks. A pattern of abuse of the periodical collection in this way can result in the loss of carrel privileges.

Honnold/Mudd Library Group Study Rooms
New Building, 4th floor

PURPOSE:

The group study rooms are for the exclusive use of faculty, staff, and students of The Claremont Colleges for the purpose of facilitating cooperative study and research. They are available by reservation only, on a first-come first-served basis. Occupancy limits vary with each room. No fewer than two persons may reserve and use a group study room. Group study rooms are not to be used as regular class meeting areas.

RESERVATION INSTRUCTIONS:

You must have a current library account. A group study room may be reserved in person at the circulation desk anytime, or by telephone (campus extension 8372). Reservations may be made up to one week in advance of the reservation date. The following information will be needed at the time a reservation is taken:

  1. your name
  2. college affiliation
  3. number of people in the group
  4. ** the date and length of time needed
**There is a reservation limit of two hours. If, at the end of the group's time, no other group has scheduled the room, that group may renew it for two more hours.

CHECKING OUT THE STUDY ROOM KEY:

  1. At the designated reservation time the person who has reserved a study room may check out the key to the room using his or her ID at the circulation desk; the reservation is honored for 15 minutes past the reservation time before the room is made available to other users.
  2. At the end of the reserved time-- up to two hours-- the room key must be returned to the circulation desk and either (a) turned in or (b) renewed for up to two more hours.
  3. The room key may not be taken out of the library.

Faculty Study Carrels and Meeting Rooms

PURPOSE:

Honnold/Mudd Library reserves 11 Faculty Study carrels for use by faculty of the Claremont Colleges. Application forms are available from Circulation. Each carrel is semi-private and is designed to be a place where faculty can work on projects that entail extensive library research.

They are in no way to be considered personal offices or "belonging" to the faculty member. Should the faculty member have a research assistant who is actively involved in the faculty member's research, the faculty member may make arrangements with the Circulation Dept. to allow the assistant access to that faculty member's carrel. Using the carrel simply as a convenient place for storing books or other materials or as office space for a research assistant are not considered appropriate uses of the carrel.

POLICIES:

Assignment priority:
Faculty carrels are assigned on a first- come, first-served basis, but with priority going to current, fulltime faculty. Emeritus and adjunct professors and visiting scholars can be assigned carrels after the first 6 weeks of the Fall semester, provided all requests from fulltime faculty members have been met.
Assignment length:
Because of the demand for Faculty Study carrels and their intended purpose as an aid to faculty doing extensive library research, all carrel assignments are reviewed at the end of each academic year. Faculty members who demonstrate a continuing need for a carrel may receive an extension for the next academic year. However, no faculty member will be allowed to have a Faculty Study carrel for more than 2 academic years without first working their way back through the waiting list.
Leaves of Absence:
Any faculty member taking a leave of absence or an off-campus sabbatical will forfeit his/her Faculty Study carrel during the time of the leave. However, the faculty member is assured of a carrel with no reduction in assignment time upon return to The Colleges. If a faculty member leaves the campus for the summer, the library may assign his/her carrel to another faculty member or visiting scholar for the summer.
Personal property:
A faculty member may bring a typewriter, personal computer or other equipment, research materials, and supplies into the Study, but the library is NOT RESPONSIBLE for damage or loss to any property left in a Study.
Food/smoking:
No food or beverages are permitted in the Study. Smoking is NOT permitted.
Door Access Codes:
The access code to each Faculty Study will be changed at the beginning of each Fall semester. Faculty members assigned to a Study may obtain the code from the Circulation desk. The code may not be shared with research assistants or other persons without express authorization by the Circulation Department.
Communication:
The Circulation Dept. assumes that each Faculty Study carrel is being used on a regular basis and that it can therefore communicate with faculty through placing notices on the carrel. It is the responsibility of the faculty member to respond in a timely manner to all such communications.
Monitoring:
A member of the Circulation staff will monitor each Faculty Study carrel for both appropriate usage of the carrel and adherence to policy, especially the periodical and book check-out policies. Disregard for policies, including providing access to the Study for research assistants or other persons who have not been authorized by Circulation, will result in loss of use of the carrel and its reassignment to another faculty member.
Courtesy:
A successful carrel program requires that all users show common courtesy to those with whom they share a Study as well as to the library staff who administerthe policies.
Usage Instructions:
  1. When checking out books you wish to leave on your Faculty Study carrel:
    • Please indicate that it is for your carrel so that the circulation department will not desensitize the material. This may prevent someone else from carrying an item checked out to you from the library.
    • The circulation department will give you one carrel flag per book that must be placed in the book. Fill ou the flag at the time of check-out. It must indicate the call number of the book and the number of the carrel. Please remember that an item on your carrel that is checked out is lost to the library. This card will tell the staff that the book is checked out and will prevent it from being returned to the stacks.
  2. Please do not leave periodicals on your carrel. Any found there will be promptly returned to the stacks. A consistent pattern of abuse of the periodical collection in this way can result in the loss of carrel privileges.
