Checking Out Materials

Undergraduates/Graduates

LIBRARY CARD

Your campus ID card serves as your library card. The card must be presented when checking out library materials, renewing books, paying bills, etc. It is your responsibility to notify the Honnold/ Mudd Circulation Department if your card is lost or stolen. You must also notify the department regarding any change of address so that notices will arrive in a timely manner

CHECKING OUT A BOOK

Bring your library ID card and the books you wish to check out to the Circulation Desk. Date due bookmarks are available at the check-out desk; please get one before you leave. Blais will also indicate the due date. Undergraduate freshmen, sophomore, and junior students have a 28-day loan due date. Seniors, like graduate students, have an all semester loan period. There is a limit of 60 books that may be checked out to undergraduate students at any given time

Graduate students have an all-semester loan period and are assigned one due date at the end of each semester. There is a limit of 140 books that may be checked out to graduate students at any given time.

RENEWALS

You can now renew items yourself through Blais, the online catalog. Renewals can also be made at any of the reference desks, in person or on the phone. Requests will be processed when current student status has been verified and all library fines, if any, are paid

RETURNING BOOKS

Please return books you are no longer using on or before the due date. Book return slots for Honnold/Mudd are located: inside--2nd floor, computer search center, north wall; outside---(WEST) at the Dartmouth & 8th Street curb site near the Honnold Loading Dock, and (EAST) at the Columbia curb site on the east side of the Mudd building. Reserve books must be returned to the Reserve Desk on the 2nd floor, New Library. This will insure that your reserve material is returned in the computer on time and made immediately accessible to other users. Bound periodicals and recalled books returned on the due date must be returned inside the building.

SEARCHES

If you cannot find a book--- which is not checked out--- in the stacks or the reshelving area, please look again a second day. Contact the Circulation Department if you still cannot find the book on the second day. You may then request that a search be made for the book. You will be notified by mail when the book is found.

RECALLS

To recall a book which is currently checked out, present your library card at the Circulation Desk along with the call number or title of the book. Books which have been recalled are given a new due date. This date is ten days from the placing of the recall unless the revised due date would shorten the current borrower's loan period below a minimum of two weeks. A notice will be sent when the book is ready for pick-up. Please remember to notify the Honnold/Mudd Circulation Department regarding any change of address so that you will receive notices in a timely manner. If you receive notice that a book has been recalled, you are obligated to the new date.

OVERDUE BOOKS/FINES

Two (2) courtesy overdue reminders will be sent to you within a 3-week period. Failure to receive an overdue notice does not exempt you from obligation to the due date. Please remember to pick up a date-due bookmark at the time of checkout.

When the account is overdue by 3 weeks, it is billed. Until the time a book is billed there are no daily fines for main stack books. At billing time, you will be charged a $10.00 non-refundable billing fee per book in addition to the replacement cost.

Reserve and periodical materials do have hourly or daily fines that accrue.

This overdue notice formula does not apply during the period at the end of the academic year in May. In order to facilitate graduation deadlines, and in order to insure that all students may use the library through Finals week, we are forced to abbreviate the overdue-notice schedule.

LOST BOOKS

Borrowers are billed for materials which are damaged or lost. If you lose a book before it is due, please inform the Circulation Department so that you will not be charged the $10.00 billing fee.
