Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery

When the Libraries do not own what you need, we will get it for you. Faculty, currently enrolled students, and staff may use the following services to request materials needed for their research.

LINK+

LINK+ is accessible three ways: When searching for items in either version of Blais and a book is listed as checked out or otherwise unavailable at the Libraries of The Claremont Colleges, use the option to search LINK+ for the item. When in the WWW version of Blais, click on the button that says "Search LINK+" to automatically perform a search for that book.

The option to search the entire LINK+ catalog, without going through Blais, is also available. This option is presented in the main menu of both versions of Blais. Direct a web browser to the LINK+ Central Catalog at http://csul.iii.com/ . When searching the entire catalog, borrowers must remember that any books listed as available at the Libraries of The Claremont Colleges may not be requested via LINK+.

What is LINK+?

LINK+ is a book request service and union catalog that allows students, faculty and staff of The Claremont Colleges to borrow books unavailable at our Libraries from several other LINK+ libraries.

LINK+ is a part of Blais, the Libraries of The Claremont Colleges Online Catalog.
See Accessing LINK+ above for details.

Borrowers place the requests themselves via the LINK+ catalog. Within a Blais search on the WWW, authorized users may click on "request this item" to request a book when the book they want is displayed. After a book has been requested the system will ask for the borrower's name and college/library ID number. When copies of a requested book are held at several libraries, the system will automatically select the lending library. If requested books cannot be found at one lending library or are otherwise unavailable there, the request will be canceled, and automatically re-requested at the next lending library.

Borrowers monitor the status of their requests themselves via the "View Your Own Record" option on the opening screen of Blais. Requests take about four working days. When the status of a requested book appears as "LINK+ RECV'D", it is ready for pickup at the Honnold/Mudd Library Circulation Desk.

If a copy of a book is available at the Libraries of The Claremont Colleges, it cannot be requested through LINK+. If all LINK+ copies are checked out, borrowers will have the option to place a hold. If no copies are available at the Libraries of The Claremont Colleges or through LINK+, students, faculty and staff may place a request with  Interlibrary Loan.

The loan period for all LINK+ books is 21 days. NO RENEWALS are allowed, and there is NO GRACE PERIOD. The fine for late book returns is $1.00 per item per day. The replacement charge for a lost LINK+ book is $100.00, plus a $15.00 billing fee for a maximum $115.00 per book.

Borrowers are limited to 10 LINK+ transactions on their library record at one time. Borrowers' library accounts must be in good standing to be eligible for LINK+ service.

For questions regarding LINK+, please contact Linda Gunter at (909) 607-3979, or send an email to: linda.gunter@libraries.claremont.edu.

InterLibrary Loan

The Interlibrary Loan (ILL) Unit, part of the Department of Access Services at Honnold/Mudd, will obtain items not owned by The Libraries of the Claremont Colleges. Books, periodical articles, microfilm and other resource materials can be borrowed from other libraries. We use several national and international electronic networks to determine the holdings of thousands of other libraries for our ILL services.
WHO CAN BORROW?
Interlibrary borrowing privileges are available to faculty, emeritus faculty, staff and students of The Claremont Colleges. ILL is not available to Claremont Colleges alumni or to other community-card holders.
IS THERE A CHARGE FOR ILL?
In most cases, there will be no charge to you for Interlibrary Loan materials. We do reserve the right to pass on charges to you and to limit the number of requested items. If you have an ILL item overdue by 2 weeks, we reserve the right to suspend your ILL privileges and to process no additional ILL requests for you for at least the remainder of the semester. Please be aware that overdues or fines in ILL will also block your borrowing privileges from The Libraries of The Claremont Colleges.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE?
The time required to obtain items from other libraries varies according to the item's availability, the library or system through which the item is obtained, and the delivery system used. Please allow 2-4 weeks for delivery of most items, and plan your research needs accordingly.
HOW LONG CAN YOU KEEP THE BORROWED ITEM?
Books loaned through ILL are available for use at the lending library's discretion. Books are generally loaned for a period of two weeks, with renewals available in some cases. Known exceptions are: 1) items borrowed from The Center for Research Libraries (CRL) often have longer loan periods; and 2) borrowed items that are rare or fragile are often restricted to "in-library use only" and may have limited loan periods.
WHAT CAN AND CANNOT BE BORROWED?
ILL will not request items that are owned by The Libraries of The Claremont Colleges, the Claremont School of Theology or Rancho Santa Ana Botanical Gardens. Many libraries will not loan the following types of materials: rare or fragile books, titles published in the last year or two, titles published before 1800, audiovisual materials, computer disks, and tests. Doctoral dissertations and Master's theses are available for loan from many institutions.
