Find Articles in Older Journals
Although most databases provide indexing and full-text only from the 1980s to present, a few allow you to search for articles in much older publications. Each of these databases covers a range of subjects.
American Periodicals Series Online provides full-text coverage of American magazine journalism from 1741-1900.
HarpWeek: 1857-1889 provides the full text of Harper's Weekly, one of the most important general news and culture magazines of mid to late 19th Century America.
JSTOR provides image and full-text online access to major scholarly journals in most disciplines. Years of coverage vary by journal: some go back to the mid-1800s. (Note: JSTOR does not include the most recent few years of journals.)
OmniFile provides indexing for articles from the past century. In the Database Selection Area in OmniFile, choose Humanities & Social Sciences Retro (1907-1984) for scholarly articles; choose Readers' Guide Retro (1890-1982) for articles in popular magazines.
Periodicals Index Online indexes articles from a wide range of American and European periodicals. Coverage is 1665-1995.
