The Robert Burton (1577–1640) Collection came to Honnold/Mudd Library of the Claremont Colleges as one of three gifts from Paul Jordan Smith (1895–1971), literary editor of the Los Angeles Times during the 1940s, in memory of his wife, Sarah Bixby Smith (1871–1935). The first six editions of Burton’s Anatomy of Melancholy (1621–1652), the 1927 edition edited by Smith and Floyd Dell, and original editions or contemporary versions of Renaissance Latin authors and others cited by Burton, form the bulk of the collection. Early presses represented include Froben, Aldus, and the Elzevirs. Burton’s Anatomy of Melancholy and Burtoniana, a checklist (Oxford University Press, 1959), a catalog published by Mr. Smith, describes volumes included in the original gift.
