Wheeler Scrapbook—Book One, Page 1 (more information).
As the unofficial repository for early documents of the City of Claremont, The Library has developed a Claremontiana collection of local history holdings over the years. The early growth and development of the town was closely connected with Pomona College, and as a consequence important papers generated both officially and unofficially are in Special Collections. Local newspapers, maps, scrapbooks of clippings, manuscripts, minutes of clubs and civic groups, photographs, etc. all contribute to this collection. The Claremont Courier, 1908 to the present, is available on microfilm. One of the most historically valuable items in this collection are the three volumes of the Wheeler Scrapbooks, 1884–1938. Frank Wheeler, a real estate businessman, assembled three very large scrapbooks with the assistance of Pomona College faculty member Edwin Charles Norton. It details early Claremont history, and that of surrounding areas, through clippings, photographs, reports, pamphlets and maps.
