The Gomperz Correspondence was given in 1959 by the late Professor of Philosophy at Scripps College, Philip Merlan, and his wife, Franciszka Merlan. The collection comprises more than 250 autograph letters and seventy-seven postcards written between the years 1869 and 1920 to University of Vienna Professors Theodor (1832–1912) and Heinrich (1873–1942) Gomperz, father and son. Writing in German, French and English, their correspondents included Ernst Mach, H. Diels, August Nauck, Edward Robert Bulwer-Lytton and Lady Edith Lytton, Hendrick Jacques, Heinrich and Lily Braun, and Lewis Campbell. Originally, the collection was given to the Merlans by Professor Heinrich Gomperz.
