Perhaps one of the least-known elements of the Western Americana collection is a group of ninety-two Mexican newspapers purchased by the Pomona College library in 1939. They include El Sol, Nos. 1–48, December 1821–May 1822 and fifty-seven volumes of El Universal Grafic, 1922–1927. Others were published from the 1850s to the 1870s and thus cover one of the most stirring and important periods in Mexican history.
