This richly illustrated history of balloons and the development of aeronautics depicts a number of aeronautical accidents as well as triumphs in the early 19th century.

The illustrations in this woven silk prayer book were based upon those in illuminated manuscripts of the 14th through the 16th centuries.  These silk books were favorite Victorian gift books.  This copy was given to Mrs. Henry Walters by her husband who established a major art museum in Baltimore.
