“The College Bell” - story from the 1902 Metate. Return to scaned image version of this poem.
“The College Bell”
Beloved bell, no tie is fonder
Than that which binds my heart to thee;
Dear college bell, where’er my footsteps wander
In memory’s tower thy form I see.
My straining ear shall wait to catch thy tone;
As longs the weary wanderer at home to be,
So shall I long thy welcome sound to hear,
Ringing aloft in mighty majesty.
Each day, each hour, of the short, busy years,
Thou mark’st with willingness so free,
And sendest forth, for victories won, thy clamorous notes of praise,
Ah, when other bells seem cold and dreary,
Thou, thou alone, loved bell, canst cheer me;
So ring again, again, I wait for thee!
