Collection Development Policy for Drama
Objectives: To support the teaching and research programs of the Theatre and Dance Department of Pomona College and complement the needs of related majors, such as literature, classics, and art.
Bachelor of Arts in Theatre is offered at Pomona College. The program includes study of performance, design and technology, directing, theatre history, and dramatic literature. Students may also minor in Theatre.
Subjects and collecting levels: Materials will be purchased at the teaching level, the level needed to support undergraduate instruction and research. Collection strengths include theory, technique, and practice. The literature of drama, the plays themselves, is collected as part of the various literature collections, under the guidance of those collection development policies. In addition to monographs and journals, the collection will include reference materials, such as specialized encyclopedias, handbooks, subject indexes, and bibliographies.
Types of materials collected: Print and electronic materials in the form of monographs, serials, and indexes will be collected as well as microforms. Videos and sound recordings are collected when requested by faculty to support instruction.
Languages: Major emphasis is on English language materials, although no language is specifically excluded. Publications in other languages, especially Spanish, French, and German may need to be acquired when the desired material is not available in English. The literature of drama, collected under the various literature policies, will often be acquired in the original language as well as in translation.
Geographical emphasis: Major emphasis is placed on United States and Western Europe. Material on the theater of Asian countries is also collected, including a specific interest in Kabuki. No geographical area is excluded.
Chronological limits: Emphasis is on contemporary theater, though standard historical material is also collected.
