Collection Development Policy for Physics & Astronomy
Objectives: The collection is designed to support the teaching and research needs of physics & astronomy offered at the Claremont Colleges.
The undergraduate curriculum in physics and astronomy is offered at Harvey Mudd College, Pomona College, and the Joint Science Program at other Claremont Colleges.
Subjects and collecting levels: Subjects to be collected in physics and astronomy shall include: electricity and electronics, mechanics, atomic and nuclear physics, quantum mechanics, optics, and other classical and emerging areas of physics and astronomy research. In addition, coverage should also include areas impacted by the application of physics such as biophysics and geophysics. Therefore, the physics and astronomy collection shall include inter-disciplinary coverage. Collection level is instructional support level for undergraduate programs.
Types of materials collected: The collection shall consist of electronic databases, journals, monographs, serials, study guides and reference manuals.
Languages: Major emphasis is on English language materials, although significant works in other languages will also be considered.
Geographical emphasis: Materials reflect scholarship worldwide.
Chronological limits: Emphasis is on contemporary materials, though some historical material may also be collected.
